The Thais like to say: 'Thai Massage is like having yoga done to you!' or 'Thai Massage is yoga for lazy people!'
A complete Thai Massage incorporates a combination of acupressure and yoga-like stretches. It is very different to most other massages styles and is performed on a comfortable floor mat or massage table (if needed). The client remains fully dressed throughout the session. No oils are applied!
The therapist uses hands, knees, legs, elbows and feet to perform the treatment.
Thai Massage is a significant part of the Traditional Thai Medicine and practiced over hundreds of years. Thai Massage is also known in the west as Thai Yoga Massage or Thai Yoga Therapy.
What should I expect at a Simply Plenitude Thai Massage Session?
You should expect a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. The massage itself requires smooth and comfortable movement, so loose and flexible clothing like pajamas or Yoga attire is recommended. You can also change into the spa attire that we provide. The massage is done on a floor mattress that allows for maximum comfort and mobility during the session. You may be positioned in a variety of Yoga-like positions during the session of the massage that complement the deep, rhythmic pressures administered to your preference. At the end of the massage you will feel completely relaxed and refreshed.
If you aren’t comfortable on a matt, we offer tale Thai Massage and Chair Thai massage as well
Who can have a Thai Massage?
Basically everyone!
Thai Massage can be varied to suit a wide range of physical and emotional needs and is suitable for clients of all ages and abilities and doesn't require any level of fitness or flexibility.
There are a few precautions to consider such as that it is not recommended to have a massage in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Is your style of Thai Massage the same as the traditional style which is taught in Thailand?
Not totally, but quite close. We are leaning more in the direction of being a creative healing artist than a follower of tradition.
How is Thai Massage different from other massage styles?
There are quite a few differences:
Is Thai massage advisable for the elderly?
Thai massage is wonderful for elderly people and for those managing different abilities. In fact, lack of mobility is one of the leading causes of age-related muscular deterioration. Thai massage takes muscles and joints through their full ranges of motion. This means clients can enjoy the benefits of yoga – from opening tight joints to deep relaxation – by having their bodies safely moved passively through yoga-like poses. It is more therapist friendly since you can use more of your body than in most other massage styles
What should I wear?
You’ll stay fully dressed and will be most comfortable in stretchy clothes, like leggings or sweats. I like to wear long sleeves and pants, to stay cozy while the therapist stretches and presses me.
Meal before the massage session?
Don't eat any heavy meals before the massage (heavy meal: leave 2 hours for digestion. light meal: leave 1 hour for digestion)!
Is the pressure deep or light?
Stretches are meant to go to your edge, but not in a painful way. The therapist will rhythmically press into your tissues in a way that’s both relaxing and energizing, using the palms, knees, feet, and thumbs.
What if I'm not flexible?
If you’re not flexible, this is actually a great bodywork style for you to gain mobility. Most stretches are done in sets of three:
This gives you and your therapist a chance to notice before a stretch goes too far.
How is this different from Western massage?
Thai massage takes a holistic approach to the body. It addresses both the physical body, with its deep pressing and stretches, and the energetic body, via the energy lines known as “sen”. There is more body contact between the client and practitioner–imagine relaxing as someone moved you through yoga postures. No lotion is used.
Will I be comfortable on the floor?
The mat I use is a nice thick cushion. Some people feel more comfortable with additional pillows under their knees, or to support them in sidelying. You are always welcome to ask for more.
Is Thai massage safe during pregnancy?
Traditional Thai massage is not recommended for pregnant women or for post-natal treatment. We do offer pre-natal massage (after 12 weeks of pregnancy), and post-natal massage (starting four weeks after birth). These treatments can help to relieve muscle aches and joint pain and help with recovery. Thai massage is available as a post-natal treatment starting 6 months after the birth of baby. Just like with a table massage, a pregnant client will need additional support for comfort and ease. The stretches are not as deep, because the body is dealing with the effects of relaxin. Thumb presses are never done with the intensity.
What to expect?
Receiving a Thai Massage is not only an exquisite and relaxing experience, but also a deep and holistic approach to physical and emotional wellbeing.
Thai Massage is very different to most other styles of massage because the therapist uses hands, feet, knees and elbows to move you gently into a series of yoga-like stretches and works meanwhile on different acupressure points and energy lines of the body.
Thai people love to call it: "Yoga for lazy people".
The massage is performed fully dressed and on a comfortable floor mat. No oil is applied!
Get taken away in a dance of movement and flow...
How often shall I have a Thai Massage treatment?
It is recommended to enjoy at least a full session of Thai Massage once a month to maintain wellbeing! If your health needs improvement, weekly or at least fortnightly sessions are required. There is no actual limit of treatments although I wouldn't recommend more than one session a day
